TWO TORTUGAS Belgian Quad
Holiday Ale 2011
San Diego may not top the list for birdwatchers but it certainly tops the list for beer-drinkers. And while you’re more likely to spot a Sea Turtle than a Turtle Dove, tracking down a world class beer is easy. Two Tortugas is the 2nd addition to our less than literal “Twelve Days” series of holiday ales. This Belgian-inspired Quadruple Ale has a delicate union of toffee, dark fruits, and warming spices that will continue to develop with age. Raise a glass to 2011 or save a bottle for 2021, this turtle’s got legs.
2012 World Beer Cup
Silver Medal
2011 Great American Beer Festival
Bronze Medal
2012 California State Fair Commercial Beer Competition
Gold Medal
“I knew that this was going to be a special beer. What I didn’t know at the time, however, was that the brewery was planning on submitting it to the 30th annual Great American Beer Festival in the Belgian-style Abbey Ale category. Of all the entries, it was the only Quadruple to be submitted, eventually beating out 73 contestants for the honor of third place and a bronze medal. That’s pretty damn awesome, yet not at all surprising for a brewery that continues to impress.” -Ray Henry, The Barley Blog
“One sniff of this beer and you know you’re going to be in for a treat. Belgian candi, figs, raisins, a healthy dose of booze and light spices all come together wonderfully.” - Ray Henry, The Barley Blog
“I’ve said it many times before and, if this Belgian Quad is any indication, I’ll probably be saying it for quite some time to come. Karl Strauss Brewing continues to produce some of the tastiest beer I’ve had the opportunity to sample. Two Tortugas is no exception as one of the better Belgian-style ales I’ve had from an American brewery. It’s also a beer that I can see improving with a little cellaring to mellow out the alcohol presence a bit, allowing the flavors to mature and come into their own. 4.5/5” - Ray Henry, The Barley Blog
“This 11% Belgian quad style ale is a amazing beer from Karl Strauss … because it fit what a quad should be: great strength with bolder flavor compared to its Dubbel and Tripel sister styles. Typically a dark creation that ranges within the deep red, brown and garnet hues. Full bodied with a rich malty palate. Phenols are usually at a moderate level. Sweet with a low bitterness yet a well perceived alcohol.” -The Beer Heads
