This is a smooth, malty scotch ale with rich caramel flavors and a warming finish. The beer’s malt sweetness is balanced by pronounced scotch characteristics carefully developed by aging the beer on scotch-soaked American oak chips.
Poached egg, zucchini “noodles,” sun-dried tomatoes, beer bacon, peppers, basil, garlic, and parmesan. It takes a robust dish to stand up to our Holiday Ale’s rich malt character and scotchy-scotch-scotch flavors. The honey-smoked salmon enhances the scotch overtones in the beer, while the bacon, egg, and cheese bring a richness to the dish and intensify the beer’s warm finish. Opening in February of 1989, Karl Strauss Downtown became the first brewery to open in San Diego in more than fifty years. Located blocks from San Diego’s city center, this historic brewery location is where Master Brewer Karl Strauss brewed the first batches of his namesake Amber and our World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival medal-winning Red Trolley Ale. The original onsite microbrewery remains in full operation, consistently producing a series of rotating special release brews to pair with our West Coast pub fare. In addition to our drink beer, think food approach to beer and food pairing, Karl Strauss Downtown features 10 craft beers on tap, brewery tours, and a knowledgeable staff of craft beer enthusiasts.
