Steamed Bao buns, beer-braised Duroc pork belly, spicy soy glaze, green papaya kimchee, fresh basil and cilantro, sesame, and cucumber relish. If you think it is unusual that we’ve paired our San Diego pale ale with a classic Vietnamese sandwich, then you don’t know Karl. Pintail’s vibrant citrus flavors play off the spicy soy and kimchee, while its caramel malts bring out the flavor of the pork belly. The beer’s hoppy finish matches the bright flavors of the cucumber relish.

Opening in February of 1989, Karl Strauss Downtown became the first brewery to open in San Diego in more than fifty years. Located blocks from San Diego’s city center, this historic brewery location is where Master Brewer Karl Strauss brewed the first batches of his namesake Amber and our World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival medal-winning Red Trolley Ale. The original onsite microbrewery remains in full operation, consistently producing a series of rotating special release brews to pair with our West Coast pub fare. In addition to our drink beer, think food approach to beer and food pairing, Karl Strauss Downtown features 10 craft beers on tap, brewery tours, and a knowledgeable staff of craft beer enthusiasts.
