KARL Invites You To “Try One, Have A Few” With Our Latest Release: Mosaic Session Ale



Introducing a new beer is always exciting, but our latest brew has us particularly buzzing. The first of our “Tank Tap” series to be called up to the big leagues, it began as a humble one-off brew and has now graduated to a full on commercial release. The story begins back in 2013 when the head brewer at our Downtown Brewpub, Sean Albrecht, crafted the recipe for a small batch release he called “Mosaic Wheat”, an unfiltered American-Style Wheat Pale Ale. The light copper color and cracked wheat/citrus flavor combination was a hit and it was tapped out in a matter of days. “The first time I smelled Mosaic hops, I knew I had to brew a beer featuring them,” says Albrecht. “I was inspired to brew a hop bomb that Californians would love, but something that was drinkable enough to enjoy a few pints at a time. I started with a clean malt profile and then double dry-hopped for big citrus aromatics.”


The Mosaic hop has emerged in the last few years as one of the most sought after varieties on the craft beer scene, and continues to be making its way into more and more recipes. “Mosaic™ (HBC 369) is an aroma hop variety developed by Hop Breeding Company, LLC that was released in 2012. It offers a unique and complex blend of floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics that translate very favorably into several styles of beer. Mosaic™ is the daughter of Simcoe® (YCR 14) and a Nugget derived male.” (UsaHops). It’s ability to pull double duty as both a bittering and aromatic hop allows for it be utilized in each step of the brewing process.

Earlier this year we were searching for a perfect warm weather, refreshing beer with a low ABV to drop during the summer months. The clear choice was what we have today, our Mosaic Session Ale—an unfiltered 5.5% ABV single-hop beer with a hefty dose of wheat for a light body and crisp finish.  Though scaling up a small batch recipe to full production scale is fraught with challenges, after multiple test batches we feel we’ve truly captured the essence of Sean’s original recipe and are proud to showcase this beer as part of our Coastal Reserve Series.


This beer is available on draft all across the Golden State (check out this list for availability, we will be updating it each week), including all of our Brewery Restaurant locations and at our Tasting Room. A limited number of 22oz bottles are available at the Tasting Room and Brewery Restaurants as well. Of course, since everyone will be “having a few”, this release will only be around for a short time. Grab a pint while it lasts!
