I LOVE A CLEAN SAN DIEGO
Our Mission
Through outreach, community involvement and example, I Love A Clean San Diego leads and educates our community to actively conserve and enhance the environment.
Our Work
I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) is a widely recognized non-profit, environmental education organization committed to conservation and waste reduction. ILACSD operates a Recycling & Household Hazardous Waste Call Center, holds workshops, and provides community outreach and presentations throughout San Diego County. ILACSD has built strong partnerships with community members and local and state governments in order to enhance environmental education and awareness in San Diego. ILACSD provides pollution prevention programs and hosts other educational activities in order to create a safer environmental climate. Please visit our Programs page for more information and find out how you can get involved. The success of many ILACSD programs is due to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.
Our History
I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) has a long and successful history as a non-profit organization committed to the conservation of San Diego's coastal and inland resources. Our roots go back to 1954, when the San Diego City Council and the County Board of Supervisors created a joint War Against Litter Committee (WALC). Throughout the early 1960s, the WALC organized neighborhood and beach cleanups to help raise public awareness of San Diego's litter problems. The WALC won the First Annual County Award, in 1965, for its litter-prevention efforts from Keep America Beautiful, Inc. In the late 1970s, "I Love A Clean San Diego" became the slogan under which the WALC publicized its special events and ongoing beautification program. The slogan was later adopted as the organization's name. Then in 1989, ILACSD merged with the San Diego Ecology Centre, another local non-profit environmental group funded through San Diego State University. With combined resources and staff, the agency took on an array of environmental education programs and developed into the comprehensive environmental agency that exists today.
Success Stories
All I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) programs have seen great success. More people attended ILACSD events last year than ever before with over 3,200 hours donated by our volunteers. Here are a few other success stories:
ILACSD performed 274 school presentations in 2001 reaching over 19,900 students. Schools participating in our programs have been more than satisfied with the information that an ILACSD presentation brings to the classroom or club. Teachers from Rosebank Elementary School had this to say, "We learned a lot and had good hands-on fun!" and the Mira Mesa High School Ecology Club commented, "Superb job - very friendly and knowledgeable." ILACSD was also endorsed by representatives from The Children's Initiative, "I Love A Clean San Diego is a great community partner for after school programs."
The ILACSD Recycling & Household Hazardous Waste Call Center continues to be a valuable asset to the residents of San Diego County. Last year the Call Center received over 32,000 requests for recycling information. Over 4,000 calls were also received regarding information about Household Hazardous Waste disposal.
ILACSD Beach Cleanups are always a great success, witnessing tremendous support from volunteers throughout the county. In 2001, over 4,500 ILACSD volunteers collected over 11,000 pounds of litter along our coastline and waterways.
